OPENS SPACE FIRE PROTECTION (posted 12/11/2011)
We are fast approaching the beginning of the 2012 fire year, and we will likely once again have to fight to have the same level of fire protection that we enjoyed when the cows grazed in the Open Space. In 2011, Summit Ridge residents wound up having excellent fire protection because the City hired goats to graze in the area immediately surrounding Summit Ridge -- and, serendipitously, the goats grazed for twice the number of days contracted for because their owner did not have another job lined up for them. But this outcome only occurred because a great many Summit Ridge residents complained long and loudly about the increased fire danger, emailing the Mayor and City Council, signing a petition, and attending meetings with the City.
Unfortunately this was not the case for the other four communities bordering the Open Space – Beacon Ridge, Quail Ridge, Secluded Valley, and Summit Road. Hence, they were subjected to a much higher level of fire danger throughout 2011 than in previous years.
In 2012, we hope all five communities will enjoy the same high level of fire protection that Summit Ridge had in 2011. To initiate our efforts this year, we have invited the Supervising Ranger of the Open Space, and the Fire Prevention Technician with the Contra Costa County Fire District, to talk about fire prevention at 7 PM next Wednesday, December 14 at the Summit Ridge clubhouse. We anticipate this will be a cordial affair in which we politely listen to what the speakers have to say, and then press our case that all of our communities deserve the same high level of fire protection that we enjoyed when the cows grazed in the Open Space. Needless to say, the more residents from all five communities who attend the meeting, the greater our chances of achieving this goal.
Please pass this info on to anyone you think might not have received it, such as new residents. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the meeting!

FIREPLACES & STOVES
Burning wood in home fireplaces and stoves on “bad air” nights became illegal at the end of October 2009. Lighting up is banned during “Spare the Air” alerts. Burning wood is deemed a health threat and the air district will impose a fixed fine of $400 for second time violators. The air district will give the public more advance notice this year of no-burn alerts; 10 hours instead of 2 hours.
